The Gospel by Grapevine Studies
I came across a free copy of this study and was very excited when I opened it up! (It's free until the end of August!) This is the gospel taught using simple drawings. And since I'm not the best artist, I loved the simple stick drawings. Even I could pull that off!
Each lesson is broken up into three basic parts. A reading (or signing), a discussion, and a drawing. They also add in some vocabulary words and coordinated verses for deeper digging. Another feature I love about this, is that they show what a completed student page should look like.
It is very simple, but I LOVE it! You could stretch it out over a week or do it all in one day. Just depends on where your child is at. This study excites me about what else Grapevine Studies has to offer. This is a awesome visual tool for teaching the gospel!

Bible/Character Resources
We Choose Virtues
I was honored to receive this set of cards from We Choose Virtues. I came across their product on other homeschooling blogs I read and I was curious. I love instilling Christian virtues on my children, but sometimes it is harder than at other times. First off, the drawings are adorable and very fun and inviting. So that would be sure to peek the interest of a visual deaf child ( I know that is redundant, but wanted to make a point - they are very visual!)
The set comes with twelve character traits: Forgiveness, Diligence, Obedience, Kindness, Patience, Helpfulness, Gentleness, Self-controlled, Honesty, Attentiveness, Contentment, and Perseverance. On the front side is the the character trait and an adorable drawing of a child. On the flip side is a re-inforcing sentence and memory verse. Very simple, yet definitely gets the point across. Included in the set is also directions for three games to play with the cards. I also found them to be awesome as award cards! When a child shows that quality during the day they get presented with that character card at dinner time. Just find a place to let the child display it until the next day. A simple reward!
This is a great tool for hearing or deaf kids alike. Since there isn't a lot of wordiness to it, even a non-reader could take advantage of the cards. Give them good word recognition using the front of the cards. They are simple enough not to be overwhelming or confusing. One of the games is acting out the character traits and would be an awesome way to re-inforce our Christian values with a deaf learner!

Honor Your Father and Mother: The Fifth Commandment for Little Ones
This is a simple, but easily applied, book. The book is simply set up with a question, a scripture as the answer, and a simple coloring book drawing. Book is easily copied for coloring projects while you are focusing on teaching a particular trait. An index is also included to easily find a specific trait that needs refining.
For example:
Question: Do I recognize that my parents are doing what God requires of them when they correct and discipline me?
Answer: “The rod and reproof give wisdowm, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.” Proverbs 29:15
There is also a simple picture to color.

Armor of God Pattern
Deaf kids love acting! Doorposts offers complete patterns for sewing your own Suit of Armor. What fun! I bought all the supplies, which were all found at a craft store, and did a pour job of putting it together. But the kids loved it! It really is a simple sewing project, I just didn't have the time to put detail into it.
Mighty Acts of God
This is a “guide to simple family drama times.” The first few pages contain topics such as “Why Dramatize?”, “Different Ways to Dramatize”, “Easy Costumes”, and “Getting Started”. The bulk of the book is story notes for creating your own family dramas. Using common Bible stories, the Forsters give the scripture reference, characters, costumes, and story line. The book finishes with “Dramatizing with Toys”, “Special ‘Story Meals’”, and a couple of patterns for simple costumes. What a great addition to your Bible study library for your deaf learner.
Hidden Treasures
This is my favorite Bible reference for the deaf learner! If you are familiar with anything Doorposts creates, this one matches in quality and Biblical truth.
The hidden treasures referred to is the precious book of Proverbs. The beginning of the book is the obvious explainination of how to use the book. Also included is ways to include Proverbs into your everyday life. The rest of the book is full of children’s illustrations of various Proverbs.
If you have ever read any of the Proverbs and tried to explain them to a hearing child, never-the-less a deaf child, then you understand how abstract they can be. These illustrations fill that gap! Most are very literal drawings of a particular proverb, which give the child a picture to directly relate to a meaning. We would make copies of a chosen proverb and allow the children to color them as we discussed its meaning and how we can relate that to our life. Once the child has the hang of that, they can start creating their own proverb pictures! What fun!
This book includes 90 Proverb illustrations – a great springboard.

Our 24 Family Ways
This is a family devotion book that would work well for the hearing or deaf. It is simply set up so that any family could use it successfully. Using an outline for each of the 24 Ways or Values, the authors make it self-explanatory and easy to use. The outline used is called A.R.T.S.
A – Ask a question.
R – Read the Bible.
T – Talk about it.
S – Speak to God.
You will need your Bible and if you have young children you will want to add the 24 Family Ways coloring book. Each way includes five days of family devotions, but each family could use as few or as many as they pleased. The authors’ website offers printable “Make Your Own Way” worksheets and suggested Bible stories that will correspond with the 24 family ways.
The book is completed with a family statement, “We’re on the Way,” which each family member would sign and a celebration could follow!

More Doorposts Goodies
This collection of these easy to follow patterns is a wonderful addition to your deaf child’s spiritual upbringing. I really enjoy Doorpost’s illustrations and these projects are not an exception. Hands-on and visual projects are perfect for the deaf learner.
The Moses Doll kit includes directions and pattern to make a hand sized felt doll. This is a beginner level sewing project with pleasing results. Like all of Doorpost’s products, these are very economical and use easy to find materials.
The Jonah & the Big Fish kit is similar to the Moses kit but it has more pieces to assemble. This one would be very helpful for re-telling this favorite Bible story and a great craft project.
Another neat method of re-telling Bible stories are Doorpost’s Bible Paper Dolls. They come on sturdy card stock, ready to be colored and cut out for hours of fun. The set includes three paper dolls and outfits for Bible Characters such as Mary, Ruth, Rahab, Queen Esther, John the Baptist, Pharoah, King Solomon and more. Also includes the Armor of God! Very detailed drawings! Fabulous for recreating Bible stories.
Family Circles is a visual reminder of who's turn it is to spend with mom and/or dad. Since it is mostly just visual cues, it is a great resource. Easy to make, fun to use.
A Day of Delight is a book full of ideas of how to make Sunday a Holy day. We found this book to be fun and got us to thinking what we could do on Sundays that would make them different than the rest of the week. Since this book is geared to teaching the parents, it would work with deaf or hearing children. It just gives you ideas on what to present on Sundays.
They also offer the Creation Cards. We took ours and colored them, then cut them out and glued them to cardboard. It made thick flashcard-like squares and we are able to teach the order of creation with them. And easy, fun activity.
